History of Coldwell Banker CommercialThe origins of Coldwell Banker Commercial® date back to 1906 in San Francisco when Colbert Coldwell helped to rebuild the city after the devastating earthquake. Later joined by Benjamin Arthur Banker, the two partners were initially devoted to commercial real estate brokerage. It wasn't until 1937 that COLDWELL BANKER formed a residential real estate department. Through the next several decades COLDWELL BANKER embarked on a nationwide expansion, becoming the dominant commercial real estate company nationwide. In 1981, COLDWELL BANKER was acquired by Sears, Roebuck & Co., becoming a part of the Sears Financial Network. The 80s were a period of extraordinary growth for the company as COLDWELL BANKER made numerous acquisitions throughout the country. In 1989, Sears, Roebuck & Co. sold the commercial side of Coldwell Banker's business to a group now known as CB Richard Ellis. In 1991, Coldwell Banker formed a pilot program of 41 commercial offices. As a result of the purchase, an agreement to not compete in major markets was entered into by the two companies. The non-compete agreement expired in 1994. In 1996, Coldwell Banker was acquired by HFS, Inc. (now Cendant Corporation) and became part of one of the world's largest real estate franchise organizations. Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation (COLDWELL BANKER) is one of the largest franchisors of real estate brokerage firms which maintain commercial operations, with more than 400 offices throughout the United States.
